WEEK 24 -- May 2. Last Class.

It is so hard to believe that we have completed another year and who would have thought we would still be doing virtual classes. I surely didn’t. What a crazy year! I’m very disappointed I did not have a chance to get to meet you. To all the students thank you so much for all the time and effort you have put into learning more about God and your faith this year. To all the parents thank you so much for being so supportive of your children and your parish in helping to pass on your faith to your children. I know firsthand how difficult it can be trying to help your children with their online school work, but you did it…you made it to the finish line. Job well done!

There is still one more lesson to go. There are three lessons left that we did not get to cover. Your assignment this week is to pick ONE of those remaining lessons. However, if you get time over the summer please look at the other two. It is not required but there is some good information that you can learn by doing so.

Here are the remaining lessons:

Session 22 – Living a Moral Life – pp. 181 –188
Session 23 – Growing in Holiness – pp. 189 – 196
Session 24 – The Way to Jesus – pp. 197 – 204

Here are the review sites for the lessons:

Session 22
Session 23
Session 24

Have a great summer,
Nick

WEEK 23 -- Apr. 25 - May 1

Good morning,

It is hard to believe that we are down to the last two classes of CCD. This week’s lesson will focus on making moral decisions. As parents, we know how hard it is to teach our children to make the right choices in life. Hopefully, this lesson will help you in that teaching/learning process.

Week 23 assignment (April 25):

  • Unit 5 Session 21 (pp 173 - 180). Please be sure that your child reads the session and completes the activities.
  • When completed go to https://isr.findinggod.com/fg_g5_s21 and complete the review. Remember to have fun with it. It’s not a test! It’s to see how much we learned this week.

    Have a great week,
    Nick

WEEK 22 -- Apr. 18-24

Hi,

I hope you are enjoying the Easter season which has just begun!

Here is this week’s lesson -- Week 22 assignment (April 18):

  • Unit 4 Session 19 (pp 155 - 162). Please be sure that your child reads the session and completes the activities.
  • When completed go to https://isr.findinggod.com/fg_g5_s19 and complete the review. Remember to have fun with it. It’s not a test! It’s to see how much we learned this week.

    Have a great week,
    Nick

WEEK 21 -- Apr. 11-17

Good morning,

I hope everyone had a very enjoyable Easter. It’s hard to believe that we are down to our last few weeks of classes. Thank you again for all the time you have put into your religious studies this year.

Here is this week’s lesson:
Week 21 assignment (April 11). Unit 4 Session 18 (pp 147 - 154). Please be sure that your child reads the session and completes the activities.

When completed go to https://isr.findinggod.com/fg_g5_s18 and complete the review. Remember to have fun with it. It’s not a test! It’s to see how much we learned this week.

Have a great week,
Nick

WEEK 20 -- Mar. 28 - Apr. 3

Good morning,

Just a reminder that there is no formal lesson this week. As an assignment, I would like you and your family to watch a religious movie together. Also, I encourage you that if you have not gone to confession this Lenten season that you consider going this week.

Please also consider going to mass, or watching the livestream, during the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday). So much of our faith, and the mass itself, is based on the events that occur during this most Holy Week.

There will be no assignment next week.

Have a very Happy and Blessed Easter,
Nick

WEEK 19 -- Mar. 21-27

Good morning,

As we are nearing the end of Lent our focus this week will be on the Easter lesson, but Lent isn’t over yet. Let us still focus on the three pillars of the season: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Also, the sacrament of confession is very important during the Lenten season. If you have not had a chance to go to confession yet there will be plenty of opportunities over the next two weeks. Please check the bulletin for specific times. If possible please consider attending (or watching the livestream) mass on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday or Easter.

This week will be a traditional assignment, but for next week (Palm Sunday) I would like you to watch a religious movie with your family. Last night, I watched the movie Fatima which was excellent. Fatima is based on a true story in which the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three young children in the town of Fatima, Portugal. If you have Netflix it is free to watch. You can watch any religious movie with your family, there are so many great ones to choose from -- Netflix also has a great movie called The Two Popes detailing Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.

Here is this week’s lesson:

  • Unit 5 Session 25 (pp 205 - 210). Please be sure that your child reads the session and completes the activities.
  • When completed go to https://isr.findinggod.com/fg_g5_s25 and complete the review. Remember to have fun with it. It’s not a test! It’s to see how much we learned this week.

Have a very Blessed and Happy Easter,
    Nick

  • When completed go to https://isr.findinggod.com/fg_g5_s17 and complete the review. Remember to have fun with it. It’s not a test! It’s to see how much we learned this week.

WEEK 12 -- Jan. 31 - Feb. 6

Good morning,

Wow that break went by fast. I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year. I also hope this email finds you healthy and well. As I was doing an assignment for one of my courses just recently I had to pull out a book that I have not used in years. In the margin in that book I wrote “Teach your children the faith because no one else will”. That was written pre-pandemic, but how true are those words? Society today is moving more and more away from religion and it is us, as parents, who are most responsible for teaching the faith to our children. Now when I wrote that no one who have dreamt what was coming with the pandemic and with parents having to help home school their children with their CCD classes, but I want to thank you and express great gratitude for what you are doing and to let you know how important you are. It isn’t easy but you are making a huge difference in your children lives.

As always please never hesitate to ask me if you need any help.

WEEK 8 -- Nov. 22-28

Just a few notes before we get into this week’s assignment:

  • No class next Sunday (Nov 29) for the Thanksgiving break. Have a very Happy, Safe, and Blessed Thanksgiving
  • As we get into the holiday season you will notice that we not always be going in order in the book. I change sessions around, sometimes we cover 2 sessions, skip sessions, etc….it’s all to try to fit the lessons around the season. If we skip a session, we will come back to it later.

Week 8 assignment (Nov 22):

  1. Please have your child lead the family in Grace before your Thanksgiving dinner. Children are very nervous praying aloud, especially in front of a group (even family), so please be very supportive and help them if necessary.
  2. Next Sunday begins Advent. In addition to the next session I will be assigning the lesson on Advent (It’s very short)

-----------------------------------------

Hello,

As a parent myself it has been a real unique challenge trying to help my children with their schoolwork and trying to keep it as “normal” as possible. Our CCD classes are no different, and I thank you for all your continued efforts in providing a religious education to your child. I hope Unit 1 went well. I did not hear of any major issues, so I assume all is going well. Please let me know if that is not the case.

Here is just a very quick recap of Unit 1:

Unit 1 focuses on creation and emphasizes that God the Father created us and continues to care for us. He calls us to live in his kingdom.

  • Session 1 dealt with Creation and God as the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)
  • Session 2 is about Adam and Eve and Original Sin.
  • Session 3 talks about the Old Testament and focuses on the covenant made with Abraham. This covenant is renewed with Moses and God gives us the Ten Commandments.
  • Session 4 begins to talk about the New Testament and how the Son of God became man so that we could share in God’s life. Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God and talks about the Beatitudes.
  • Session 5 talks about Ordinary time.

I realize that some of this might be overwhelming and let’s be honest…..we may not have read or talked about some of this since we were in CCD class!!!! But that is also what is great about this year…..it’s giving us a refresher course as well!

Please reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Nick

WEEK 6 -- Nov. 8-14

Good morning,

Here is the parents guide to help you and your child with Unit 2. Please email me with any questions or suggestions. I will be sending out an email later in the week recapping Unit 1.

Week 6 assignment (Nov 8):

  • Unit 2 Session 6 (pp 45 - 53). Please be sure that your child reads the session and completes the activities
When completed go to https://isr.findinggod.com/fg_g5_s6 and complete the review. Remember to have fun with it. It’s not a test! It’s to see how much we learned this week.

This week we are also encouraging all families to take a little field trip with their children by getting outside and enjoying a nature walk. As we learned about God’s Creation in Session 1 let’s get out and enjoy this beautiful weather and all of God’s wonderful creation.

Have a very Blessed week,
Nick

WEEK 1 -- Oct. 4-10

Hello Parents and students!

I am really exciting about starting a new CCD year.  As we navigate through this craziness we will do our best to give your child the best CCD year ever!  In order to do this I will need your help to maximize your child’s learning.  To make this easier for you I'm sending out this unit parent’s guide that will help guide you on what your child should be learning each week.  However, if you have get confused please never hesitate to email or call me.  For the most part I will be going along with the book each week, but occasionally I’ll be sending other learning activities as well (especially when we focus on the bible).  I think you are really going to enjoy doing this with your child, plus it may be a good refresher for you as well.

Week 1 assignment:

  1. Discuss with your child what they would like to learn about this year in CCD.  Please email me their response so I can make sure that we cover it throughout the year, plus it is a way that I confirm everyone’s email address so please don’t forget to respond.
  2. Unit 1 opener (pp 3 – 4)
  3. Unit 1 Session 1 (pp 9 – 12).  Please be sure that you child reads the session and completes the activities
  4. When completed go to https://isr.findinggod.com/fg_g5_s1 and complete the review.  Remember to have fun with it. It’s not a test! It’s to see how much we learned this week.

Thank you so much for all your help, and never hesitate to reach out to me if I can help you.

God Bless, Nick

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 year of St. Eulalia’s Religious Education program. I am excited to be your child’s teacher this year, and I am looking forward to sharing my faith with them. I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. This is my second year as the fifth grade CCD teacher, in addition to being a catechist I am also a lector and eucharistic minister.  I am entering my third year of formation in the Diocese of Scranton to become a permanent Deacon.  In addition to my formation studies I am also enrolled in a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies program at the Pontifical College of Josephinum.  I am married and have four beautiful daughters who are also enrolled in CCD from grades 4 - 8.

As you are aware, we are beginning this year virtually. Depending on your personal preference, you have been given a physical or digital copy of the book for your student. Each week we will send the week’s lesson and any supplemental materials via email and Remind (see below for instructions on joining the Fifth Grade Remind class). Lessons and announcements will also be available on a dedicated religious education section on the parish website.

http://www.sainteulalias.com/religious-education/fifth-grade-religious-education.html

We suggest saving 9-9:30am on Sundays for the lesson and then either attend the 10:05am mass or watch the livestream mass together. However, we do understand the various constraints on each family’s time and mass preferences so as long as you can attend mass and complete the weekly assignments, we consider it a WIN.

Aside from the book materials I would also like to focus on the bible.  In particular I would like to teach your child the parts of the bible and how to use it.  If you have a Catholic bible that would be very helpful, but if you don’t that is ok too.  There are plenty of online resources that we can use.  Throughout the year I will be sending out activities so that your whole family can participate in the fun and learning.

We would also like to encourage you to join both the parish Facebook and the parish Religious Ed Facebook pages. Throughout the year there will be resources and announcements available to you as members of our parish community as well as parents of a Religious Ed student.

We realize the Religious Education virtual learning program is new and different for us all so please do not hesitate to reach out to us at any time with any questions or concerns.

Below is a brief outline of what children enrolled in St. Eulalia's Religious Education Program learn during Fifth Grade

Students use the bible to learn scripture its interpretation of chapters and verses; explaining the seven sacraments' meaning and symbols and celebrating God's life and love through each one. Sacraments of Initiation, Healing, and Service are introduced to the students.
